Duck Decisions

Guess what? We got ducks.

I've been putting the brakes on getting ducks for years, but our youngest has been pining for them—like, desperately yearning. And while ducks aren’t exactly my dream homestead animal, she said she'd buy them herself and take care of them herself. And we do have a pond… so I figured, what the heck, why not add some webbed feet to the mix?

So now we have four fluffy ducklings in our care: Dawn (named after the dish soap—shoutout to that iconic commercial), Shirley, Jeffery, and Squidge. Yes, Squidge. No, I don’t know which one is which. They all look identical so its a mystery.

Now, because our timing is impeccable as always, we’re leaving town in five days to visit our grown-and-flown kids (but always my babies) for Easter. And because these ducklings are still tiny and helpless and prone to keeling over and dying if they don't get constant care, we can’t exactly leave them behind with a pile of food and a good luck note.

Thankfully, our amazing goat-sitter friends have offered to take them in while we’re away, and we should absolutely take them up on that offer.

But also…

What if we didn’t?

What if we take the ducks with us on this trip? A duckling road trip. That would be a memory in the making wouldn't it? Four squeaky little passengers, cozying up in our RV at the campground. It would probably be fine. Maybe even fun.

Listen, I have absolutely zero duck experience. I don’t know how well they travel, how much mess they'll make, or how needy they'll be. But they're tiny. Tiny things can’t cause that much chaos… right?

P.S. Fun Duck Facts according to Google

  • Ducklings are loving siblings and communicate with each other before hatching

  • They are super-social animals

  • Ducks have regional accents! (Whaaaat??? So cool!)

  • Female ducks choose their favorite male ducks to mate with based on dancing ability (I love this so much)

  • Some ducks can live up to 20 years

  • Ducks have better vision than humans

  • Duck bills are as sensitive as human fingertips and palms

  • Ducks are meticulously clean animals (Psh... not from what I've heard which is why I didn't want them in the first place)

  • They are capable of abstract thinking and have deep emotional lives

And if it says it on the interwebs, you know its true! 😉
