To Donkey or Not to Donkey: That is the Question

We’ve got most of the classic farm animals around here—chickens, ducks, geese, goats, a cow, yaks (okay, those aren't classic), but no horses. I’m just not a horse girl; never have been. But is a farm really complete without horses? Would a miniature donkey count? Now that seems like fun. They’re tiny, they’re fuzzy, they’re adorable. What’s not to love? Plus, they're horse-adjacent, so close enough, right?

Miniature donkeys, mother and baby
Clementine at one day old. How precious is she?!

So we put down a deposit on this little lady right here. Her name is Clementine—we pre-

named her, obviously—and she’ll be weaned and ready to come home with us in mid-August.

Exciting, right?…Or is it?

I thought I was sure I wanted a mini-donkey. But now I’m not sure I’m sure. You know?

I’m waffling. I’m emotionally flipping like a hot mess pancake.

On one hand: cuteness overload.

On the other: one more living creature to care for.

What if she doesn’t get along with the goats? What if she’s lonely and needs another donkey friend (cue: mini donkey #2)? What if she’s a biter? What if she’s a kicker? What if she hates us and plots our downfall from day one?

I know I’m spiraling. I just can’t shake the feeling that I might be inviting adorable, fuzzy chaos into an already overbooked barnyard life.

So I’m asking you—my fellow animal lovers, farmers, donkey whisperers, and general chaos navigators: Do you have a donkey story? Good, bad, hilarious, slightly traumatic? I want to hear it. Drop your donkey stories in the comments!

Help me figure out if Clementine is meant to join the Homestead-ish circus—or if I need to back slowly away with my hands up.
